Are there any real differences between Estes and Quest launch sets?
I've used Estes since I was a kid and wanted to take my son out to shoot off rockets. The local hobby shop carries Quest equipment and I was wondering if there are any major differences in design, quality, etc. when compared to Estes.
The launch controller from Quest is unique, and I think it is far superior to the one from Estes. First, it is a pistol-grip design. That makes it easy to hold. Second, it uses a single 9 volt battery. That is much cheaper than the 4 AA size batteries that the Estes launch controller uses. And finally, it has two ways to let you know that you are ready for launch. It has both a loud alarm beeper, and a blinking LED light. The Estes controller uses a light bulb that sucks the energy out of batteries, or it is difficult to see in bright sunlight. The unit also has 18 feet of launch cable, so you can stand back at a safe distance when you launch your smaller rockets.
Plus, the controller can be used to launch any rocket engine, including the Quest, Estes, Apogee, and Aerotech rocket motors. So when you're ready to move to more advanced rocket kits, you don't necessarily have to buy additional launch equipment.
The launch pad is used to hold the rocket in the launch position so it won't tip over in a breeze. Every launch pad contains a 3 foot long launch rod that guides the model until it reaches a flight speed where the fins are effective in controlling the direction of the model.
This pad has a molded plastic base which has a futuristic appearence. It holds a standard 1/8 inch diameter launch rod, which can be used for most any small rockets, including those from Apogee Components and Estes. It will support most small rockets - that use a C engine or smaller (Note: for larger size rockets, see the F.A.Q. below).
Also included is a safety-rod cap. This cap is placed on the rod until the rocket is ready to lauch. It comes with a bright yellow ribbon to make the cap easy to see, so you don't forget to remove it prior to launching the rocket.
The Quest pad is an inexpensive launch system that will give you years of use.

Howard was sent to the bench only 22 second into the game with his second foul as things didn't look good for Orlando early against Houston. "I thought they jinxed me today because before they said this would be the game and then I got the two quick fouls and I was like, 'Oh man, I hope I don't get any more,'" Howard said after the game. "But I just tried to come back and just be aggressive on both ends." Heading into tonight's match-up on ESPN, the Magic are 39-19 straight up, 29-26-3 against the spread as betting favorites in NBA basketball odds and 4-6 after playing the Rockets. The Hornets were clipped 115-95 by the Milwaukee Bucks last time out as 6-point underdogs in NBA basketball odds. That game's 210-points sailed OVER the posted total of 193.5 at online sportsbooks. Marcus Thornton led the Hornets with 25-points while Darren Collison added 22-points in a losing effort dropping their second straight game. "We just didn't have enough fight, which is inexcusable for a team like this," Collison said after the game. "Mentally, we weren't in it on the defensive end. They were executing really well. I give them credit. They ran their plays to perfection." Bet the Hornets +5 as home underdogs in NBA betting odds against Magic for tonight's game on ESPN with a 10% bonus.
